Hello all

We have been accepted to join the NZ4WD club so Harry is busy sorting out all the paperwork for that. Chris has completed the Herbert forest run the Saturday just been. I am looking forward to that .With Ron stepping down as vehicle safety officer we have Craig Wilkinson stepping up so please support him in this role as he is only here to help with keeping the vehicles safe as agreed in our club rules.

Until next month

Cheers,

Greg.

General Club Information

Hi Team,

The last meeting saw a flurry of trips presented so there is a trip every month until April next year at this stage. Other trips may be arranged at short notice which can see 2 or more trips happen within a month so watch out for notications on your phone. The commitee are currently looking into better ways to send out trip information and how you respond about your intentions to attend a trip so watch this space.

There will be a small change to the trip info sheets in the newsletter.

I will list the known trips coming up below with dates and I will publish the trip sheet for the trip happening in the coming month. If you want information about future trips then visit our club wedsite for trip information sheets and other information. Feel free to look through previous trip reports, photos and newsletters while you are there and if there is a trip of interest that you think we should do then make some noise and see if it can be done. Remember we have new members joining all the time and old trips are new trips for them. If some of our older members are a bit bored with some of the scenery then how about doing the trip in reverse direction for a new perspective and in some cases more of a challenge. We are also seeing some members expressing interest in overnight trips over weekends so this may be an aditional option to the daytrips for those that may want to stay the night then head back the following day.

Anyway, heres what is coming up :-)

  • October 18th and 19th. Macauly river overnight trip with option for day trip only.
  • November trip. Omatapio Station TBC
  • December 13th. Christmas trip and dinner danseys camp.
  • January 24th and 25th three huts - Nevis Road
  • Feb 14th and 15th. Grampions
  • March 15th Forest Range
  • April Rugged ridges.

A lot of work will be happening on the website, newsletter and behind the scenes with our application to join the NZ4WDA.

Greg sent a couple of texts out for all members to update their contact information and ensure it is current. About half of our members replied. This was important as your membership and details have to be put forward to NZ4WDA so a login can be created for you to download your membership cards and the benefits that come with their club. This is quite a bit of admin to get down and sent away so thank you Harry for your extra work required to get this done.

Some info for everyone on 4x4 history.

  • 1900:The Lohner-Porsche hybrid was a very early, but not a true 4x4, electric vehicle, demonstrating the concept of driving multiple wheels.
  • 1903:The Dutch company Spyker built the Spyker 60hp, a petrol-powered 4x4 racing car that also featured the first six-cylinder engine and a 4-wheel braking system.
  • 1909:The Badger Four-Wheel Drive Company was founded, and began the mass production of 4x4 systems.
  • 1938:The GAZ-61 was a possible first 4WD passenger vehicle.
  • World War II:This period saw the mass production of rudimentary military four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Jeep became a well-known 4x4 during this time.
  • 1945:The first full-production 4WD passenger vehicle, the Jeep CJ-2A, was introduced.
  • 1948:The Land Rover was launched.
  • 1970s:The Range Rover was introduced, pioneering the luxury segment of the 4x4 market.
  • 1980s:Four-wheel drive gained popularity for use on normal roads, leading to a boom in all-purpose 4x4 vehicles.

Daylight savings starts this weekend so clocks forward before you go to bed Saturday and remember the Macauly trip is only a couple of weeks away.

Trip report - Old Kaiwarua Road

On a cool wet Sunday morning 8 trucks including 2 who had travelled from Ashburton met up at the car park opposite the Waihao Forks pub ready to commence the days trip led by Owen and his co-pilot Chantelle.

We left there making our way up Stoney Creek Rd to the first gate leading to the Old Kaiwarua Road.  As we drove this first part the rain soon turned to sleet and then light snow.  On reaching the gate the landscape became a winter wonderland  covered in snow just beautiful.

The next section was the drive through forest with quite a bit of gorse along the way.  Our trip leader was well equipped and made several stops along the way to cut back branches closer to the track trying to avoid too many scratches to our vehicles.  The snow continued to fall but in the distance there were patches of blue sky.

With the weather clearing we then carried on following the track driving very carefully through the many greasy patches along the way. One of the drivers needed a bit of assistance when their truck slipped off the track but just a minor hiccup.

Lunch stop was at the old Kaiwarua woolshed site. As we were lower in the valley there was no sign of the snow we had encountered earlier so a good area for a break.

Moving on towards the station sheep yards and through the Kinbrace Rd the track was still very wet and greasy in spots but posed no problems to most of our experienced drivers with just 1 needing a small helping hand when stuck in the mud.

Next stop was Cattle Creek for a cuppa in the sun. From here the group split up with 4 trucks heading back to Oamaru through Kurow and the other 4 taking the Myers Pass road home.

Thanks Owen for another enjoyable days outing.

Norm and Jackie
