Trip Report - Orari Gorge River Track - Feb - 2025
A total of 16 trucks gathered together at the Geraldine Domain where we stopped for smoko, toilet stop and a brief on the days trip. After this we all hit the road heading towards Orari Gorge Station.
A quick stop was made at the entrance to pay the fees charged for access to this area.
Then we were off following the track beside the Orari River. Recent rainfall meant that there was no dust today.....YAY!!!!
Along the way Owen pointed out the site of the original crossing over the Andrews Stream which is the boundary between the two stations. The vehicle bridge was washed out and has now been replaced by a foot bridge. We carried on further to the now boundary gate and crossed the stream onto Blue Mountain Station.
This part of the track took us all the way back to the other side of the footbridge. There were a couple of tight spots along the way which proved a little challenging for a couple of vehicles. A short stop was made to give everyone an opportunity to walk on the bridge and take in the great views deep down in the stream.
Moving on along the way our trip leader making mention of 2 old huts in the area that were over 100 years old but have now gone to rack and ruin. We did not stop to view these but did see the relics of an old vehicle nearby which had come to rest down a steep bank.
From there we followed the track on the west side of the Orari River taking in the picturesque scenery along the way. Just beautiful.
Our lunch spot was made in a sheltered area on the flats before we carried on to find the station exit.
This part proved to be a bit of an adventure as it was through the river bed and finding the easiest way to cross this took a little while but we finally made it back out to the road.
From here we all headed back towards Fairlie. Pam pointed to Dry Creek Station on the right where the 4WD club had visited many years ago using the Shearers quarters for accommodation. Next stop was Lake Opuha where the days trip ended and everyone then went their own way.
This trip proved to be a really enjoyable one. Thanks so much to Pam and Owen for the work put into making this happen.
