Hi everybody,

Thank you to the club members who came along to the AGM, your input was appreciated and we look forward to another year – and yes, I was re-elected and again, with the support of the committee (and others) that we will have another successful year.  Thank you to those members who made themselves available for the committee.

We have just completed the May trip in the Dunback/Macraes area after all the comings and goings we had a good turnout and while the weather still did get us – it was a good day out. Thank you to Pam and Owen Phaup.

At this stage we are looking towards the West Coast trip at Westport, again watching the weather but looking as if we may get some good days and according to Les Weir (Trip Leader) looking like a great weekend away.

Prior to the AGM, Russel had indicated that his 10 year tenure as Magazine Editor was to come to an end.  Russell, has done a great job and 10 years is a long time to sit in this position and as you know, a club without a magazine is lost.  Thank you Russell for your commitment and hard work – enjoy your retirement!   So, when it came time to fill this vacant, important position at the AGM, all heads dropped, no eye contact was made and no show of hands!  Luckily, Ian Vercoe had been mulling over this happening and has kindly offered to also take over this roll.  Ian is going to digitalise our magazine and you will now receive it by email.  It will be available to read on our website too but don’t despair if computers are not your best friend, hard copies will be posted; just let Ian or myself know and your name will be put onto a mailing list.

Subs are now due and you will note that there has been no movement to the subscription and subs remain the same.

Trip Report - Otematata Station - April 2019

On Sunday 28th April 11 trucks met at 9am at Waitaki Holdings to travel to Otematata. The day wasn't quite the best with it being overcast and  cloudy.

We met up with another 5 vehicles once we got to Otematata so there were 16 total to do the trip. Ron gave us a rundown on the day as well as some information about Otematata station. We also used the time to have some morning tea.

We left at 10.30 and set off on our way to Otematata Station. They day was still overcast but bursts of sun were making their way through.

There was mustering happening so we did have to watch out for where we were going. We came across a large mob of sheep coming down from the hill. It turned out we'd gone the wrong way so we turned around and went up another track. Ron had warned us there'd been no recon done prior to this trip.

As we were heading up the hill we had great views of Otematata, Lake Aviemore and the Benmore dam.

We drove downhill for a while  before taking another wrong turn and having to turn round again.

Ron reassured us that he did know the way out and we could see the way out in the distance.

We also had had views of Benmore Peak and Haldon Arm in the distance.

We took a little "detour" where we were able view Glenbouie Hut from above. We then turned around and went downhill to the hut we stopped at 1pm for lunch. The hut was a little larger than other huts we've seen in that it had several rooms.

After an hour we continued on our way where had a nice and uneventable trip back to Otematata where we stopped for a debrief at 3.15.

We thought it might be interesting to have a gate count. . We had to open and go through 24 gates on our trip.

Thank you Ron for a very enjoyable day out

Trip Report Dunback / Macrae's area Sunday 19th May, 2019

After a cancellation the previous Sunday due to ground conditions, 16 trucks meet at the New World car park on a brisk but sunny morning ready to make their way down via Trotters Gorge Road to Steve and Margaret Vickers property at the back of Palmerston.

On arrival, a stop was had for a quick morning tea followed by an introduction to Steve and Margaret who gave members a brief of what to expect and look out for while traveling on their farm, this was followed by Owen Phaup running through club rules and procedures and yours truly putting up her hand (not sure how that happened?? I’m sure I was just swotting a bee away…) to write the trip report.

Steve and Margaret farm a mixture of river flats and hill country on the lower end of the Kakanui Range.  They farm 100 beef cows mainly on the hills as well as 1300 ewes and 350 hogget’s.    The first part of the trip was to travel into a hut at the back of the property where we were to have lunch.  The beginning of our journey took us across the river flats where Steve pointed out the work that was being undertaken by ORC on the creek and explained that it was constantly monitored.

After a very quick but steep climb, we stopped at the top of the hill which was spectacular. It gave us a view South of Palmerston and Puketapu (of course), and further South to the Otago Peninsula and a very clear view of the range of hills on the Dunedin Motorway known as the Sleeping Maori; East, to Moeraki and Oamaru; North to the Humtucker’s and the back of the Dunback Lime Works as well, the area of burnt land that the local fire brigades had been battling with the previous week and finally, West to Stoneburn and Macraes.  We spent a bit of time here as there was just so much to see.

On arrival at the hut it was to find that it wasn’t really a hut but a house and very much a home away from home which the Vickers family use frequently as a holiday home and where one of their sons had got married. It was a lovely spot for lunch but the day very quickly was changing so we headed off back up the hill with Steve concerned at the showers he could see coming over and deciding against the planned second 4WD part of the trip and returned us to his house via a different route.

Under Steve & Margaret’s lead we headed off up to the Macraes Oceana mine which was also on the day’s agenda, where we stopped at the viewing platform and had a look into Frasers Pit and watched the machinery at work. We then went across to the Golden Point Historic DOC Reserve.  This reserve protects important remnants of Otago's gold mining history and houses unique machinery which is still in working order.  This is always an interesting place to visit and members scattered all over the site to look at everything that was on display.  It is an interesting contrast from what had been viewed at the modern Macraes Oceana Gold mine.

With the day quickly turning to late afternoon, we headed home via Golden Bar Road, Stoneburn Road onto the Dunback Road. We stopped at the white railings corner rest area to have a debrief and say our thank you’s and good byes before making our way independently home.

This was an interesting day out with a lot of variety.  Thank you to the Steve and Margaret Vickers for hosting us and Pam and Owen Phaup for making this happen.
