Trip Report - Monument Hut - Hopkins River
On a beautiful spring day, with a touch of snow on the hills, 18 trucks ventured into the Lake Ohau area towards the ‘Monument Hut’, Huxley and Hopkins Rivers.
We stopped for morning tea at Lake Middleton where everyone caught up with each other and where we had a special celebration ‘shout’ of tasty muffins.
Thank you and Happy Birthday ‘Mr President’.
We travelled on, with spectacular views of the Ohau Skifield, Dobson Valley on the right and Huxley Valley on the left. Who needs to travel overseas when we have all this at our back door?
Trucks, or their drivers, enjoyed slip sliding in mud, navigating very deep ruts, and challenging river crossings and were in their element when tow ropes and instruction were required!
From the Monument Hut, where we had lunch, we snaked up the Hopkins Riverbed, finding crossings, trying to dodge rather large boulders, finally arriving at the ‘Red Hut’, where we came across two women who were exploring the area on horseback, for a few days. What wonderful scenery in which to have time out!
From that hut, we travelled a further hour and a half upriver to Elco Stream and views Mt Trent, with a little cloud over the top. It was on this mountain that the three men, recorded on the monument at Monument Hut, lost their lives.
In all, a great trip out in the high country. From a reliable source, altitude: 2,500Ft.
A big thank you to Donald, our leader and Les, tail-end-charlie, and everyone for taking time out
from their Father’s Day celebrations. Ron and Julie Prado EZL682
