Trip Report #1 - Mt Domet - Christmas lunch - Duntroon

Please load images

Russ led the trip from Waitaki Transport with Donald as tail end Charlie. We collected Les & Chris at Horse Gully Road and Robert Borrie at 7 Mile Road.  Arrived at Duntroon Domain, collected more members here and dropped off the club trailer, Les & Chris remained at the Domain to prepare the delicious Christmas meal - $15. A head.

13 vehicles headed into Oteike Road where we collected 3 more members – 16 vehicles.

We headed straight up Oteike Road, we observed the Glamping tents and kitchen block clustered on the hillside, the hills were looking very dry.  We stopped for a lengthy cuppa at Mt Domet Station Hut, an amazing back country hut with carpet on the floor, bunks and double beds, sofas, inside shower and toilet, good kitchen and 2 outside baths with heating rings under them, the front side of the hut has a garage door which could be opened up for an awesome indoor outdoor experience.  This hut can be booked for stays, a great spot to go for a quiet weekend.

On up the hill – beautiful views of the Waitaki Valley, and our stunning hill range above us – the St Mary’s are amazing any time of the year.

Back down and back to Duntroon Domain, paid the cook our $ and filed into the kitchen to plate up our main of ham off the bone, chicken, silverside, salads, new potatoes, peas YUM.  Seconds for anyone who wished to indulge.  Pudding up next, profiteroles, jelly ice cream, fruit salad and cheesecakes.

Greg gave thanks to Les & Chris for organising the day then Les thanked those who led the trip and advised that more trips were possible in the area.  Les had arranged some amusing games for those who wished to partake, toss the gumboot, golf chip into the bucket and bowl the bottle over. Much laughter and side line advice.

Great food, good conversations, and a nice couple of hours four wheel driving, what more could you ask for.  Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year.  Thanks to Les & Chris and Trip leaders.

Bring on 2021.      Chris Thompson.
