Trip reports - Omarama Saddle - Upper Manuherikia

Please load images

This trip was organized and led by Richard Wade and involved Omarama Saddle, Upper and Lower Manuherikia, Oteake Conservation Park and Oterehua. We all met at Richard and Alison's place about 9.30 on Sunday morning for another delicious Scone/coffee/tea party before departure. Just great, as always !

There had been 21 cars registred to come on the trip, but later on 2 cancellations. So I assume there was 19 vehicles on the trip. At lunch I tried to count the number of people and came up with about 35.

As per Richard's strict instructions, we left his place at 10.15 am with the understanding that it was going to be a big day, and it was. We turned off the Lindis Pass  highway into "Broken Hut Road" and drove to the end where one has the choice of taking either the East or the West track over Omarama Saddle. The elevation of the Saddle is about 1400 metres on the eastern track and about 1250 metres on the western track.

We set out on the western track, passed the Top Hut and on to Boundary Hut where we stopped for a short break. As we drove on it was decided to stop for lunch at "Homestead Garden " camping ground which is about 10 km south of Omarama saddle on the western track. It was a nice place for lunch under some shady trees.

After lunch we headed south along the Manuherekia River , passed Falls Dam on it's eastern side , crossed h/way 85 at Hills Creek (?) and ended up in Oterehua.

Most of us bought an Ice Cream from the wellknown, and historical (?) Gilmores  shop. The Publican across the road must have been disappointed the we didn't come into his place ! (Maybe somebody did ?)

Our return trip then started, going north across h/way 85 again and towards St Bathans but turned east before that town and then past Homestead Garden Campground again and on to the East Manuherekia Track and headed north towards Omarama Saddle.

At about this time someone (Richard ? ) suggested that the women in the group could take over the driving. Apparently some did, and all went well. Myself, being concerned about the wellbeing, convenience and safety of my wife Mareeta, suggested that I'd keep driving . Hmmm

Overall I think the trip went well and was enjoyable. The tracks were not bad, a bit hard and dusty. Numerous Fords and Creek crossings (and river branches } but no troubles as far as I am aware. We  arrived back at Omarama about 7 pm. Overall I think we totalled about 170 km and went through about 20 gates. It was a nice trip with beautiful views and nice companions.

Many thanks to Richard Wade and his wife Alison.     Regards, Erik Wikstrom
