Hi everybody,

The recent trip through the Old Kaiwarua Road on the July was well supported given the wintery weather.

Many thanks to Owen Phaup and Norman Moreton for running the trip and a big thumbs up for the extra effort in ensuring the track was passable.

Thank you to Richard and Alison Wade for your trip report.

The plans for the Reefton winter safari are in place -  please see the details listed below.

Please let me or Russell Thompson know if you are interested in going on this trip.

It is great to see members attending the club - committee meeting nights and participating in the variuos discussions.

This is the forum for members to contribute to club policies as well as table feedback and a debrief on recent club events.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the next club night

President Les Weir

Trip Report - Old Kaiwarua Road - Sunday 11th July

Sunday 11th July 9am – 9 vehicles left Waitaki Holdings for Waimate, meeting our Leader Owen.

After a brief talk, 12 trucks took off through the Waimate Gorge past Waihao Forks Hotel heading towards Meyers pass, morning tea was on the side of the road.

Away at 10.15 and over the Pass, great views of Kirkliston Range with a sky of full sun with no clouds, but cool.  Down the Haka side to Wrights Crossing and right onto the main Haka Road.  Farms are not as green here as around Waimate.  Right over the Cattle Creek bridge and climb to saddle into the Waihao River watershed.

The track had soon deteriorated from good gravel to gravel and patches of mucky clay.  Now travelling through Kimbrace Station but on a public road.  Passed large mobs of domestic deer.

Lunch was on the side of the road but as it was only 7 degrees with a steady breeze, no one wanted to hang around. On to Kaiwaru sheep yards and straight on but the road had deteriorated into more clay which demonstrated the worth of chunky tyres.  At one of the river crossings Owen had a cunning plan where he asked every truck to put some rocks in a bag and we then put them into a wash out that he and Norm had had trouble with – good plan Owen.

Finally came to Blakely Pacific Forestry Block where we had a brief afternoon tea.  It was in this area that we appreciated the extensive work Owen and Norm and their team had done in cutting back the overgrown road side gorse.  I did see two branches that they missed.

After travelling through the forestry we descended back to the valley floor and proceeded to the Waihao Forks Hotel car park where we had a debrief and disbanded.

Thank you Owen and team for an enjoyable winter trip and for your preparation.

Richard & Alison Wade
