Hi everybody,

A big thank you to Greg McFarlane and Graham and Anne Herbert for organising and running the recent trip through the Danseys Pass and Maniototo area.

Also many thanks to Norma Dovey for her trip report.

The next trip to the Mossburn area is eagerly anticipated. This is an area the club has not frequented in recent times. Please review the trip info sheet included below as to vehicle and equipment requirements. Please also note the 'off road trip' vehicle limit is 12 vehicles.

Norman will be happy to answer any querries - ph 0272258511

The November and December club night dates have changed along with the Dec club xmas run and lunch

Please read below for trips planned through to March 2022.

I know this comment was included in the last newsletter however it is repeated here as the south island is still in Covid 19 level 2. It is very important that you advise the trip leader of your intentions to attend trips. This ensures the appropriate members receive any short notice cancellations or last minute change of plans.

On that note the club Xmas lunch will be held on Sunday the 19th December at the Dunback domain

Please let me know your intention to attend by the Tuesday 7th of December

Numbers are required for catering purposes

Looking forward to seeing you all on the Te Anau trip

President Les Weir

DANSEYS PASS AND BEYOND    17 OCTOBER 2021

9 Trucks left South Hill New World at 9am. We headed for Danseys Pass.

Morning tea was in a clearing just pass Mt Alexander Station.

The weather was warm and sunny. Lovely to see lambs and calves. A good lot of feed for those extra mouths.

A chat and a toilet stop in the Dansey’s Pass Reserve area. On the other side of the pub we were all interested in reading some history of the area and looking around the Cemetery.

Naseby Domain for lunch.

Greg had towed the Clubs trailor with the rescue gear in it. We pulled into the Waipiata Domain to inspect what was in it.  Not too much dust!! Equipment that would be used to get vehicles back on the road such as a Hi Lift Jack and a very substantial rope that came from Ron Sim.

Chris had done a reccy the previous weekend and led us up to the old Waipiata Sanitorium. We were welcomed by Margaret Bradfield. Margaret and her family have lived there since they purchased the property  in 1985.  They have done a lot of work inside and out. They run it as a Christian Retreat.  It was a Sanitorium for TB patients from 1923 to 1961. The altitude and dry climate was beneficial to these patients.  In 1961 it was taken over by the Justice Department and run as a prison for youth offenders.  This closed in 1980. We visited the Selah Gallery. Framed photographs by Russell Perry who lives on the property. Very impressive and well worth a visit for that.

Time was getting on so we didn’t call in a Macraes Mine.

We turned off to the right onto Ritchies Road, a gravel road that bought us out at Dunback. We checked out the Domain as a venue for the Xmas lunch. Seems like a good spot, the loo’s were nice and clean.  Sorry Les I didn’t check the kitchen personally but the ones that did will let you know what the facilities were like.

An enjoyable day out for all.     Norma & Garth Dovey
