NO4WD - Sept 2022

Presidents Narrative..

Hi everyone.

Another month is gone and Xmas is just around the corner.

Thanks for Craig for running a well run and informed training day.

Next trip is Graham Herbert's Waimate area trip, 9th October. Let him know if you're interested.

Had a discussion on the future of the club trailer. The decision was made to keep it to store our gear and to use when needed.

Happy 4wding.

Greg

Trip report - Driver training and experience day

Please load images

12 trucks with 14 club members met at Weston Hall carpark to head out to Robbs Crossing for the day to undertake a training day. The day was sunny with a cool, brisk breeze which optimistically seduced some members into wearing shorts in the belief that the day could only get better. The rest of us dressed accordingly for the day in hats & coats.
Craig Wilkinson greeted everyone and gave a quick run through of the day ahead. He also passed out a very helpful handout to take away which listed the club gear list requirements on the first page, a list of pre-trip checks and tips on both safe river crossings and driving through rough terrain.
We headed out to Robbs Crossing in convey and duly parked up at the appointed area. We started the day with a “show & tell”, each member showing what they carry in their trucks and how it is stored or packed away. This was a great session with everyone contributing tips, experiences, and learnings. What was also interesting was apart from the essential requirements that members are expected to carry each trip, was the extras that are carried as well! Many of our members who regularly head out on our monthly outings are very well equipped for most contingencies - which was nice to know.
The club’s trailer was there so the opportunity was made to go through it and have a look at what recovery gear the club has. Later in the afternoon, members got the opportunity to play with the different winching gear and to experience how it would work in different situations.
Graham Herbert & Glen McGregor each carried out a demonstration with their exhaust air jack bags under Graham’s truck. While the demonstration didn’t go quite as the men would have preferred, it was still great to watch and see just how these bags actually work.
Chris Smyth was super keen to get dirty so the Landy ended up in the boggiest patch he could find. It was a good exercise in winching as the truck had sucked down into the muddy creek and took quite a bit of effort to retrieve – it was great to watch. At the end of the day members took the opportunity to practice over loose and difficult terrain either using their diff-locks or not….
Thank you to the organisers for arranging the day and the BBQ lunch which warmed us up nicely – especially those in shorts. A big thank you to the club members who attended the day, your willingness to undertake a demonstration, share your knowledge or participate in having a go, was generous and absolutely made the day.
For those, who for whatever reason were unable to attend the day, you missed a fun day out and while I wasn’t sure for me how the day was going to pan out – I enjoyed it and was pleased I went.
