Trip Report - Hopkins Valley - Sept 3

Hopkins River Trip.

Sitting in the Sun in Omarama, we waited for the last minute dash into the Fog at the Ohau turnoff. There we joined the other 14 vehicles, some humans and a couple of Dogs.
We headed up the western side of lake Ohau; following our trip leaders Donald, Shirley and Jennifer.
The fog improved and by mid morning we had blue sky and warm temperatures, for a cruzy drive up to the Monument Hutt hut for lunch, good company and lashings of cake. Then just enough time for a quick swim and Donald signalled the “were off” horn to continue on.
Pretty easy going and shallow water crossings got us to Red Hut on the eastern side of the Hopkins for a wee look about. Then we were off again along the river bank and crossing the river again to Cullers Hut; our turn around point. The huts made me feel like staying the night.
An uneventful meander back down the valley to Monument Hut. The river was so inviting there was more swimming! A quick re-group, then we all headed south rejoining the real world about 6pm ish ,for a warp speed trip down the waitaki to home destinations.

A very enjoyable day out and a big thank you to Shirley and Donald for showing us this amazing countryside and organising the day.
Cant wait for the next one.
There is some concern that the photos from the day may have been “photoshopped”, just can’t believe everything you see these days.
