Trip Report - Oteake Conservation Park - 21st April 2024

Trip Report for Harry’s  trip to Hut Creek Hut [Pig Shit Inn]

Eight vehicles met at New World south car park for the trip where conversation touched on the possibility of the tracks being a bit wet due to Saturday nights rain however any concerns were alleviated when crossing Danseys Pass in a dust storm after having collected 4 more vehicles at the Danseys Pass holiday park.

It was a pleasant autumn day a bit cool when clouds covered the sun but mostly sunny and warm with little wind.

We crossed the pass and entered the park off Danseys pass onto the Mt Kyeburn track after waiting a few minutes for a couple of hunters to unload a quad bike and get ahead of us.

The track was in good condition and we made good time to our morning tea break on the slopes of Mt Kyeburn with great views over the Maniototo Plains and the Buster diggings.

We continued on the Mt Kyeburn track for a while before turning right onto the track towards Brown Hut where we had distant views of the Browns diggings it’s quite incredible how much mining has gone on out there.

We then turned right again onto a track less travelled and new to a lot of us the track was slow but firm and reasonably easy this led us down into Green Gully where we stopped by Fraters Creek for lunch.

After lunch we carried on the same track to Hut Creek Hut [Pig Shit Inn] arriving about 2.00pm.

The last bit of the track into Pig Shit Inn provided us with the Mud section for the day which was traversed without incident some of us even remembered to wind up our windows.

For those of us who hadn’t been there before the hut was a real treasure with its original stone floor but with a few improvements by DOC such as a new roof and some structural stuff but nothing that detracted from its charm.

We drove out past Tailings hut, on the way out we came across “The Shortcut” a steep track formed by other 4WD’s that cut across a section of the track I looked at it looked at the Bounty and the phase about not getting one’s ambitions mixed up with one’s capabilities came to mind so no go for me however the temptation got the better of Ron who decided to tackle it and did so with relative ease followed by a few others.

We exited the park via Mount Buster track where it was interesting to note that the now defunct Road to Zero program appears to have even reached in there with DOC commissioning numerous speed bumps.

Jokes aside I’m sure the water run offs do a great job of stopping the track from rutting out but I think the digger driver could have been a little less enthusiastic we managed to smooth off a few of them and I will confess to hitting one of them a bit fast because I’m sure someone will have seen it.

We stopped just past the Kokonga hut to pump tyres and for a short debrief after which some headed for home and others headed to the Danseys pub some for a quick drink while most stayed for a meal.

Many thanks to Harry for another well organized trip thanks also to those who helped with the reconnaissance.

Ray Thompson
